of coffee Ethiopia’s coffee ceremonies are not just about drinking coffee but a deeply social and spiritual event that can last several hours the coffee ceremony is an important daily ritual in many Ethiopian households where freshly roasted coffee beans are ground brewed and served in three rounds abble Tona and Baraka as you enjoy a cup of Ethiopian coffee you might be reminded of the country’s unique calendar which is about 7 to8 years behind the Gregorian calendar Ethiopia’s calendar consists of 13 months 12 months of 30 days each and a 13th month with five or six days depending on whether our journey takes us to one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular natural wonders the Great Rift Valley this massive geological feature stretches over 6,000 km from Lebanon to mosm beak but some of its most dramatic Landscapes can be found right here in Ethiopia let’s start with a bird’s eye view of this incredible formation as our drone climbs higher the sheer scale of the rift valley becomes apparent [Music] vast plains stretch out before us punctuated by volcanic Lakes towering escarpments and Jagged [Music] Peaks this isn’t just a pretty view we’re looking at millions of years of Earth’s history laid out before us [Music] did you know that the rift valley is actually slowly tearing Africa apart it’s true this massive crack in the earth’s surface is widening by a few millimeters each year in a few million years East Africa might split off to form its own continent [Music] but don’t worry we won’t have to cut our trip short this process happens incredibly slowly in human [Music] terms now let’s zoom in on one of the Valley’s most beautiful features Lake langano this coffee colored Lake might not look like your typical swimming spot but it’s actually one of Ethiopia’s most popular beach though it’s home to a diverse ecosystem that includes hippos monkeys and over 300 species of [Music] birds bird watchers get your binoculars ready you might spot anything from colorful flamingos to Majestic fish Eagles here [Music] Bale mountains as we bid farewell to the stunning Landscapes of the rift valley our journey takes us to a place shrouded in mist and mystery the Bale Mountains National Park this breathtaking Wilderness is one of Ethiopia’s best-kept Secrets offering a unique blend of natural wonders and rare Wildlife the Bale mountains are home to some of Africa’s rarest and most dangered species and we’re about to embark on a quest to find one of the most elusive the Ethiopian wolf with only about 500 individuals left in the wild spotting one is a true privilege as we Trek through the Park’s afroalpine habitat our eyes scan the horizon hoping for a glimpse of this beautiful creature the Ethiopian wolf with its distinctive red coat and slender build is perfectly adapted to life in these high altitude Meadows but the Ethiopian wolf isn’t the only unique inhabitant of the Bale mountains as we continue our exploration we’re surrounded by a landscape unlike any other on Earth the afroalpine habitat is a Botanical Wonderland home to plants that have evolved to thrive in this harsh high altitude environment look closely and you’ll see the giant lobilia a plant that looks like it belongs in a science fiction movie these strange towering plants can grow up to 6 M tall they’re surrounded by fields of silverlea Helm creating a landscape that seems almost alien in its beauty one of the most fascinating plants we encounter is the bail monkey bamboo this bamboo species is found nowhere else on Earth and is the primary food source for the endangered bail monkey it’s a perfect example of the delicate ecological balance that exists in these mountains harar as we leave the Misty Heights of the Bale mountains our journey takes us to a place steep in history and mystery the ancient city of harar located in Eastern Ethiopia harar is a city unlike any other with a rich cultural heritage that spans over a thousand years our exploration begins at the heart of harar its Old Town known as yugol this walled City a UNESCO world heritage site is a maze of narrow Alleyways and colorful buildings that transport you back in time the walls built between the 13th and 16th centuries have protected harar for Generations earning it the nickname Africa’s Mecca as we step through one of the city’s six Gates we’re immediately struck by the unique architecture the traditional harar houses with their colorful facades and intricate wooden doors are a testament to the city’s distinct identity these homes some of which are over 200 years old are not just beautiful they’re living museums preserving the traditions and way of life of the Harari people harar isn’t just known for a architecture it’s also famous for its markets the city has been a vital trading hub for centuries connecting the African interior with the coast and Beyond as we wander through the bustling marketplaces the air is filled with the aroma of spices and the sound of haggling in multiple languages but harrar has one more surprise in store for us and it’s something you won’t find anywhere else in the world as night falls we make our way to the outskirts of the city for a truly unique experience the hyena feeding ritual this nightly tradition dates back generations and is deeply ingrained in Harari culture according to local Legend the practice began during a famine when hyenas were fed to stop them from attacking livestock and people today it’s become a symbol of the unique relationship between the city and these often misunderstood animals Simeon National Park as we leave the ancient city of harar behind our journey takes us to one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular natural wonders the Simeon mountains this UNESCO world heritage site is often called the roof of Africa and it’s easy to see why as we approach the landscape unfolds before us in a series of dramatic cliffs deep valleys and Jagged Peaks that seem to touch the sky the Simeon mountains are a paradise for nature lovers and Adventure Seekers alike formed by volcanic eruptions over 40 million years ago these mountains have been carved by wind and water into a landscape that’s truly unlike any other on Earth imagine standing on the edge of a cliff looking out over a sea of Peaks and valleys stretching as far as the eye can see it’s a sight that will take your breath away but the Simeon mountains aren’t just about stunning views they’re also home to some of Ethiopia’s most unique and endangered Wildlife as we Trek through the park we’re on the lookout for one of its most famous residents the galada B spoon these fascinating primates often called bleeding heart baboons because of the distinctive red patch on their chests are found nowhere else in the world they are the last surviving species of grass-eating primates and watching them is like stepping back in time their complex social structure is fascinating to observe large groups of females are led by a dominant male recognizable by his impressive man the baboons communicate with a variety of vocalizations and facial expressions creating a constant chatter that Echoes across the mountains as we continue our Trek the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic we’re heading towards Ros dashin Ethiopia’s highest peak and the fourth highest mountain in Africa standing at 4,550 M 14,928 ft above sea level reaching its Summit is no easy feet the air gets thinner as we climb and each step becomes more challenging the ascent to Ros dashin is not just a physical challenge it’s a journey through through different ecological zones we start in the cultivated lands at the base passing through forests of giant Heather and afroalpine Meadows as we climb higher the vegetation becomes sparer giving way to a moonlike landscape of rocks and ice from the top of Ros dashin the view is simply spectacular on a clear day you can see for hundreds of kilometers in every direction lella our journey through Ethiopia’s wonders continues as we arrive at one of the country’s most extraordinary sites libella this small town in the northern Highlands is home to a complex of rocke churches that have captivated visitors for centuries lb Bella’s churches are unlike any others in the world carved directly into the pink volcanic rock these structures weren’t built from the ground up but rather chiseled from the top down the result is a series of monolithic churches that seem to emerge from the very Earth itself connected by a maze of tunnels and trenches let’s begin our Exploration with the most famous of these churches bet gorus or the Church of St George as we descend into the courtyard the cross-shaped church comes into view its roof perfectly level with the surrounding Rock the Precision of its construction is remarkable especially considering it was created in the 12th century moving on we enter the northern group of churches connected by a network of trenches and tunnels bet metana Alm the largest rock hun Church in the world stands out with its 72 pillars 36 on the exterior and 36 on the interior inside the dim light filtering Through the Windows creates an atmosphere of reverence and mystery nearby bet Mariam the Church of St Mary draws our attention with its intricate carvings and frescos the colorful paintings on the ceiling and walls tell biblical stories and depict Saints offering a glimpse into the rich artistic traditions of Ethiopian Christianity as we explore these ancient churches a question keeps nagging at us how were these incredible structures created the official history attributes their construction to King lb bellaa in the 12th century who was said to have been inspired by a vision from God but the sheer scale and complexity of these churches have led to much speculation and debate among historians and archaeologists some theories suggest that the churches were carved over several centuries rather than during a single King’s reign others propose that they were created with the help of the knight’s Templar or other foreign expertise the truth remains elusive adding an air of mystery to these already awe inspiring monuments galta mountains our journey through Ethiopia’s wonders takes us to a place that will truly test your nerves the galta mountains these towering Sandstone cliffs in the Tigra region are not just a geological Marvel but also home to some of the most inaccessible and awe inspiring churches in the world as we approach the mountains you’ll be struck by their sheer verticality the red orange lifs rise abruptly from the surrounding Plains their faces etched with countless crevices and Ledges it’s a landscape that seems more suited to mountain goats than human habitation yet hidden Within These Cliffs are over 30 ancient Rock Hune churches some dating back to the 4th century these churches weren’t built for easy access in fact many believe their remote locations were chosen deliberately to test the faith and dedication of worshippers to reach them you’ll need to channel your inner m mountain climber are you ready for the challenge let’s set our sights on one of the most famous and most daunting of these churches abuna yamata often called the world’s most inaccessible place of worship this church will push you to your limits the Journey Begins With a steep hike up the Mountain’s base as you climb the path Narrows and soon you’ll find yourself scaling near vertical Rock faces the Final Approach to auna yamu is not for the faint of heart you’ll need to Edge along a narrow ledge with a sheer drop of hundreds of meters on one side there are no safety rails here just you the Rock and the vast emptiness below it’s a heart pounding experience that makes you appreciate the dedication of the faithful who have made this journey for centuries but the reward for your bravery is beyond compare as you step into the church you’ll be transported to another world the interior is adorned with vibrant frescos depicting biblical scenes and Saints their colors remarkably preserved by the dry Mountain Air [Music] the church itself is small carved directly into the rock face with Windows offering dizzying views of the landscape below what’s truly mindboggling is how this church was created imagine the skill and courage it took to carve this Sanctuary so high up in the mountains with rudimentary tools and no modern safety equipment it’s a testament to human Ingenuity and faith danakil and Dalal next our journey takes us to the most extreme and otherworldly place on Earth the danakil depression as we descend into this vast lowland area in the northern part of the afar triangle we’re entering a landscape that seems more like another planet than part of our own the first thing you’ll notice is the heat the danakil depression is one of the hottest places on Earth with average daily temperatures soaring above 100° F or 38° C the air Shimmers with heat Haze and the harsh sunlight reflects off vast Salt Flats creating a blinding glare this is a place where survival is a constant challenge yet life finds a way to persist as we venture deeper into the depression we encounter a series of other worldly sites Sulfur Springs bubble and hiss releasing plumes of steam and the pungent smell of rotten eggs the ground around these Springs is a patchwork of vibrant colors yellows oranges and reds created by the mineral Rich Waters and the microorganisms that thrive in this extreme environment but the most incredible site awaits us at Dalal often described as the most colorful place on Earth here the landscape looks like something out of a science fiction movie neon green pools of acidic water are surrounded by crusty formations of salt and other minerals bright yellow sulfur deposits contrast sharply with rust red Iron oxides it’s a kaleidoscope of colors that seems almost too Vivid to be real the D area is actually a volcanic crater created by the interaction of magma with salt deposits this unique geology has resulted in a landscape unlike any other on our planet as you walk carefully among the delicate mineral formations you might feel like you’ve been transported to an alien world omo Valley our journey through Ethiopia’s wonders now takes us to a place where ancient cultures still will Thrive the omo valley this remote region in Southwestern Ethiopia is a Living Museum of tribal traditions where time seems to have Stood Still for centuries as we approach the valley the landscape transforms before our eyes the Lush Highlands give way to Savannah grasslands Acacia woodlands and Meandering Rivers this diverse ecosystem has been home to numerous indigenous tribes for thousands of years each with its own unique customs languages and ways of life the omo valley is home to an astonishing variety of ethnic groups the Mory known for their distinctive lip plates and intricate body painting are perhaps the most recognizable but they’re just one of many fascinating cultures in this region the HR famous for their bull jumping ceremony the Caro with their elaborate body painting and the dook with their unique recycled jewelry are just a few of the tribes that call this Valley Home each of these tribes has developed its own ways of surviving and thriving in this challenging environment their customs and traditions past down through generations are intimately tied to the land and its rhythms from the way they build their homes to their agricultural practices every aspect of their lives reflects a deep connection to their surroundings but life in the omo valley is changing rapidly the modern world is encroaching on these ancient cultures bringing both opportunities and challenges new roads are being built built connecting once isolated communities to the outside world hydroelectric dams on the omo river are altering traditional flood cycles that these tribes have relied on for agriculture for Millennia these changes are putting immense pressure on the traditional ways of life in the omo valley many young people are leaving their Villages for education or jobs in cities leading to a gradual erosion of cultural knowledge traditional lands are being repurposed for large-scale agriculture further disrupting age- old patterns of life Jena our journey through Ethiopia’s wonders brings us to Jena a bustling Market Town nestled in the heart of Southern Ethiopia this vibrant Hub serves as a gateway to the fascinating omo Valley offering a unique blend of traditional and modern Ethiopian life Jena is more than just a stopover point it’s a Melting Pot of cultures and a window into the changing face of rural Ethiopia [Music] as we enter the town you’ll notice the mix of traditional mud and thatch houses alongside more modern concrete [Music] structures this visual contrast reflects the town’s role as a meeting point between ancient ways of life and the encroaching modern world the administrative Center hosting government offices and NOS working in the region this has led to an influx of people from other parts of Ethiopia adding another layer to the town’s cultural tapestry turmi a small town that serves as the heartland of the HR people the hamr are one of the most iconic and well-known tribes in the omo valley renowned for their unique customs and striking appearance a approaching a HR Village you’re immediately struck by the distinctive architecture the traditional Hammer Huts known as ts are expertly crafted from a framework of branches plastered with mud and topped with thatched roofs these simple yet effective dwellings are perfectly adapted to the h dry climate of the region the hammer people are easily recognizable by their distinctive appearance women often wear goat skin skirts adorned with cowry shells and their hair is styled into thick ochre colored braids men typically have their hair shaped into a clay cap that’s decorated with feathers both men and women Adorn themselves with colorful beaded necklaces bracelets and other ornaments one of the most famous and intriguing HR Traditions is the bull jumping ceremony this right of passage marks a young man’s transition into adulthood and eligibility for marriage the initiate must run naked across the backs of several Bulls lined up side by side making four successful passes without falling it’s a test of skill courage and physical prowess that draws Spectators from far and wide while these Traditions have remained largely unchanged for Generations the HR like many tribal groups in the
